Moonshot Moment

The Vero Beach Museum of Art is proud to participate as a community Literacy Leader in supporting the School District of Indian River County's Moonshot Moment goal, partnering with The Learning Alliance and other local organizations.

The Vero Beach Museum of Art has been collaborating with the School District of Indian River County’s Moonshot Moment literacy goal since 2014, when district educators began coming to the Museum for professional development to help bring standards to life and literacy off the page through the arts. Pictured above are representatives of the Museum, the School District, and the Learning Alliance with then-superintendent Fran Adams who set the Moonshot Moment goal.

As many were inspired by the vision and drive to reach the moon and return in the 1960s, Indian River County's "Moonshot Moment" is a multi-year community initiative seeking to have 90% of all third graders reading at grade level by 2018. This grade level is an important year for child development, with the chances for catching up and future success diminishing for low-performing readers after third grade. To meet this goal, the Museum joins with countless teachers, parents, individuals and other institutions whose vision is for our community to become a literacy capital for the nation and beyond.

"Bringing Standards to Life" is this year's "mission" in the Moonshot Moment. One of the research-based teaching strategies that is now being embraced for this goal is the powerful effect integrating the arts into other subjects can have at all levels. Literacy learning standards encompass reading, listening, speaking, and viewing as critical skills for development. Close reading of a text is the same as close reading of a painting, or a song, or a performance. The Museum strongly believes in the power of learning through the arts and is acting as a resource for teachers and students in school and in after-school environments as well.

In fall 2014, the Vero Beach Museum of Art began hosting and collaborating with The Learning Alliance on their professional development training of district teachers. The training sessions feature strategies for using the power of the arts to help students reach the Moonshot Moment literacy goal. Teachers are given tools from visual art, theater, music, and movement education for use in their classrooms to enhance student success in literacy for all subject areas.

The Museum worked with district teachers to create public awareness displays for all thirteen of the school district’s public elementary school campuses and for the Gifford Youth Achievement Center. Thanks to a generous grant from the Indian River Community Foundation, these displays present large-scale reproductions of a work of art from the Museum’s permanent collection, paired with important literacy milestone activities by age, for parents and students to practice using visual images with suggested activities to enhance oral language development.

Visitors to the Museum can view some of the original artworks on display in the gallery as well as review and practice the literacy milestone activities using the printed resource materials.
